Stick to the basics. What is classic will always be in. If you try to be too fashionable you might end up totally out.
Choose one look and finish up with it. If you want to go classy, don't use army boots. If you want to go sporty, don't take your fancy little purse along. That also means long skirts don't go with sneakers, and your platform shoes don't go with those daisy-dukes. Think of balance when putting your outfit together: do you want look aggressive as a go-getter? relaxed? romantic? sexy?
When buying clothes, go for the quality of the piece, how well its cut fits your body, and how well it goes with the rest of your wardrobe. Don't buy a piece if you think you might wear it once in your lifetime because it only goes together with that little skirt your ex-boyfriend gave you.
Wear pieces that fit your body. Something might look good in your best friend, but maybe it's not for you.
Just because something is fashionable doesn't mean you have to have it or wear it. Some pieces are just not well suited for your body type. If you're tall and skinny, lucky for you. But most of us women are not like supermodels. Stilletos for example are great, but only if you have small feet. Otherwise it will seem like you're water skiing.
